The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) marked the 75th anniversary of women in its ranks with a ceremony in St Thomas on Saturday, December 14. Themed Sisters in Service, the event honoured the contributions of female officers while inspiring future leaders in law enforcement.
The ceremony brought together current and retired female officers alongside distinguished guests, including Sahai Maxwell, a respected parish court judge from St Thomas, who delivered the keynote address. Speaking on the theme of Legacy, Maxwell emphasised the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and the judiciary in building trust and uplifting communities.
Prominent figures in attendance included Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) Charmaine Shand and Jacqueline Green-Scafe, whose leadership has helped pave the way for greater levels of gender equity within the force. Acting ACP in charge of Area 5 Christopher Phillips, also addressed attendees, offering words of encouragement to the women of the JCF. Representing the present and next generation of leaders were Superintendent Allison Byfield and Assistant Superintendent Shante Codrington.
The ceremony featured an awards segment recognising 21 officers for their exceptional contributions to the JCF. Retired Sergeant Jennyese Heslop and District Constable Desmarie East were honoured for their remarkable 36 and 35 years of service, respectively.
Nineteen other officers received awards for their dedication and commitment, reflecting the strength and resilience of women in law enforcement.
The event served as a powerful reminder of the progress made since the first woman joined the JCF 75 years ago. It also highlighted the importance of perseverance, vision, and dedication in breaking barriers within traditionally male-dominated fields.
The ceremony concluded with a special performance by Constable Joshua McDonald, a saxophonist from the JCF Band Division, providing a fitting end to a night of celebration and reflection.
The Sisters in Service event not only celebrated the achievements of women within the JCF but also reinforced the organisation’s commitment to fostering unity and strength as it continues to serve and protect communities across Jamaica.
