Lyssons Primary romps to fourth straight INSPORTS/Devon Biscuits Eastern title

Defending champions Lyssons Primary School easily retained their INSPORTS Devon Biscuits Primary Schools Eastern Championships at the Stadium East last Friday (May 16).

Lyssons amassed 290.5 points and were well clear of second-placed Half-Way Tree Primary on 159, ahead of St Richard’s Primary in third spot with 153 points.

Lawrence Tavern Primary, which finished third last year, dropped to fourth on 142 points while St Patrick’s moved up from eighth to fifth with 123.

The top 10 is completed by Rousseau Primary (106), Windward Road (75), Harbour View (70.5), John Mills (50.5) and Yallahs Primary (42).

The St Thomas-based Lyssons have now won the Eastern Championship for the fourth consecutive year and collected J$350,000.

Half-Way Tree Primary collected J$250,000 while St Richards got J$200,000. The teams from fourth to 10th collected J$100,000 each.

Attention will now turn to the all-island National Championship between May 29-31, where all three regional winners in St  Catherine’s Spanish Town  (Central) and Corinaldi Avenue (Western).

The national champion will get J$600,000. Naggo Head of St Catherine are the defending champion.

On a day that was interrupted by heavy rains, there were some outstanding performances and 13 records were established, led by Lyssons’ Davere Walker, who set two records in the long jump open and the Class One 70m hurdles.

He leapt 5.16m, bettering the 5.15m held by Kahill Myles of Louise Bennett Primary since 2023, sped to 11.30s, and broke the 70 hurdles mark of 11.52m set by Daquan Dawkins of John Mills in 2023. He ended as the champion boy with 21 points and got J$15,000.

Half-Way Tree Primary’s Trenice McCalla was the overall MVP, amassing 24 points and receiving J$15,000. She won four events: the Class One 100m, 200m, 4×100, and 4×200 relays.

Arianna Lewis was second overall with 21.5 points, winning the Class Two 100m and breaking the record in the 200m with 27.06s and was a part of the 4×200 Open relay.

Natasha Lumbley of John Mills leapt 4.60m and smashed the girls’ long jump open mark of 4.55m held by Kayla Lewis also of John Mills.

Chadwyk Senior of St Patrick’s established two records, clocking 13.40s in the Class Three 100m and 20.28s in the 150m.

Shamara Samuels of Lawrence Tavern ran 1:00.88 to win the Class One 400m in record fashion while Giana Bryan of Constant Spring broke the Class Two 300m in 44.74s.

Kemoy Jones of Seaside Primary broke the Cricketball open event with 57.01s on the second day.

There were three records in the relays. Morant Bay broke the Boys’ Class Two 4×100 clocking 53.36s; Lyssons broke the Boys’ Class Three with 54.16s and St Richard’s sped to 53.00s for the Girls Class Two 4×100 record, which was remarkably faster than the boys.
