Jamaican singer Naomi Cowan has released her debut full-length project, mixtape Star Girl.

The mixtape, which was released on July 1, features two previously released singles, Energy and Lucky Me, as well as 11 never before heard songs.

The mixtape was produced in collaboration with Major Lazer’s Walshy Fire and includes guest appearances from the likes of reggae singers Jesse Royal, Tommy Cowan and Trinidad’s Kes The Band.

Speaking with Our Today, Cowan said her aim was for the new mixtape to show her “musical versatility”, and highlighted that it showcases a variety of genres such as “reggae, dancehall, afro-beats, hip-hop, R&B and a taste of a South African genre called amapiano”.

She noted: “(The tape) shows a lot of the sides of me that I think that my listeners have not had a chance to experience yet. There’s a lot of freestyling and so, for me, I just want people to have fun when they’re listening to it…”.

The mixtape is available as a seamless Soundcloud mix and on other streaming services in a multi-track album format.

While grateful to the many artistes she has had the opportunity to collaborate with in the past, the Kingston native stated that in future she looks forward to collaborating with more female artistes and, in particular, Sevana and Lila Iké.

In closing, Cowan said: “The mixtape is the start of a journey musically for me. It is actually a prelude to a more formal project that Walshy and I have worked on… Star Girl is just the beginning of the journey.”
