The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) continues to reinforce its commitment to quality higher education and workforce development, as noted by a courtesy call from the United States Embassy in Jamaica on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

The delegation, led by Chargé d’Affaires Scott Renner, engaged the University’s senior leadership in substantive discussions that reaffirmed UCC’s expanding national and regional footprint, as an institution focused on capacity building.

The central feature of the visit focused the delegation’s direct discussions with students, which provided a dynamic perspective on the UCC experience. In an interactive session with diplomats, students articulated their academic journeys, personal development, and career aspirations, offering compelling insights into the University’s impact at the individual level. 

During a guided tour of the University’s Innovation Hub, the embassy delegates received first-hand views of UCC’s innovation ecosystem. Within this environment, students showcased their work, shared testimonials on faculty mentorship, and illustrated how institutional support systems have facilitated their transition from academic development to entrepreneurial execution.

Speaking on the benefits of this facility, President of the Media Club Kayla Landells remarked, “The Innovation Hub has been instrumental in bridging the gap between theory and practice. It has provided us with a space where our ideas come alive”. 

Additionally, student entrepreneurs who emerged as top performers in the University’s recently concluded Business Model Competition – Calvero MC, Ego, and Caridra – presented their ventures, engaging the diplomats with their solution-oriented business concepts that reflect current market needs and global trends.

Reinforcing the University’s broader vision, the President of UCC, Professor Colin Gyles, emphasised, “At UCC, we are intentional about creating environments where students are not only taught but are empowered. Strategic engagements such as this one with the U.S. Embassy validate our commitment to producing graduates who are prepared to lead transformation in their respective fields”.

Through meaningful student interaction and institutional dialogue, the courtesy call underscores a shared commitment to strengthening the capacity of the next generation of leaders.

The UCC delegation, led by the President, Professor Colin Gyles CD, PhD, was joined by the Deputy President and associate vice-president of academic affairs, as well as other senior executives.
