China’s diplomatic engagements always speak of commitment to peace, cooperation, and development, and always stands for its proactive role on the global stage.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi has made special efforts to deepen China’s relationships with Europe, Taiwan, and neighbouring countries, particularly in its stance on the Ukraine crisis.

This was an area covered in the recent “Two Sessions” Conference held in the Great Hall in Beijing, China.

China and Europe: A vision for partnership

As China celebrates the 20th anniversary of its comprehensive strategic partnership with the European Union, the revitalisation of dialogues and exchanges across various levels speaks to a mutual commitment to strengthening ties. The operation of the China-Europe Railway Express runs more than 17,000 cargo trips connecting 219 cities in 25 European countries, utilising visa-free policies for European nationals.

These are significant steps towards facilitating unimpeded trade and cultural exchanges.

He noted that “there have been many successful China/European cooperation projects under the Budapest-Belgrade Railway link initiative, the port of Piraeus in Greece and the Paleozhaus Bridge in Croatia, are just a few typical examples”.

“China and Europe do not have clashing fundamental interests… their common interests far outweigh their differences,” the foreign minister remarked, emphasising the importance of multilateralism and dialogue between civilisations.

The Taiwan Strait: Seeking peaceful reunification

Amidst concerns over rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait following local elections in Taiwan, China reaffirms its sovereignty and the unchanging historical trend towards reunification. Over 180 countries and international organisations have reiterated their support for the One China principle, highlighting it as a prevailing international consensus.

The foreign minister underscores the imperative to oppose Taiwan’s independence unequivocally, maintaining that peaceful reunification remains the ultimate goal.

“Our policy is quite clear… we will never allow Taiwan to be separated from the Motherland,” he stated, calling for unity in opposing separatism and supporting peaceful reunification.

Neighbourhood diplomacy: Building a community with shared future

China’s neighbourhood diplomacy, exemplified by the successful China-Central Asia Summit and strategic agreements with Vietnam, reflects its philosophy of amity, sincerity, mutual benefit, and inclusiveness. Emphasising the age-old adage that a close neighbour is better than a distant relative, China’s engagement with its neighbours aims to foster a sense of community and shared destiny.

“We stay committed to forging friendship… treating each other with sincerity, and mutual benefit,” the Foreign Minister explained, highlighting the significance of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence in shaping a peaceful and prosperous Asia.

The Ukraine Crisis: Advocating for peace talks

On the Ukraine issue, China maintains an objective and impartial stance, actively promoting peace talks and seeking a political settlement. Through engagement with global leaders and the publication of its position paper, China aims to facilitate dialogue and end the conflict.

“All conflicts have to end at the negotiating table… a balanced, effective, and sustainable security architecture can and will be established in Europe,” Minister Wang asserted, supporting the organisation of an international peace conference to foster dialogue and reconciliation.
