As a patron, it’s always great to enter a space that I frequent and see improvements. Because it was the first of many for the January morning bash, my expectations were slightly reduced.

While it was clear that Sunnation is in the throes of administrative teething pains, it’s apparent that with the right formula, later will be greater.

But what made this iteration of the annual New Year do a success? Some patrons believed it was not their best yet, but others confirmed that the new home was christened just right with a more accessible and central venue, for starters.

Early birds caught a firsthand look at the eye-catching spectrum-like décor elements via colourful, flowy floral arrangements provided by the New Levels Décor team. This merged seamlessly with the unmistakable Johnnie Walker and Heineken presence on the grounds of Campion College.

The décor was as colourful and effervescent as the music that the duo of Brush1, The Road Marshal & Bloodline Franco played. From EDM and House mash-ups to the tried and tested Reggae and Dancehall mixes. It’s no coincidence that DJ Tyler, DJ Mac & Baba, Ricky Platinum, and DJ Quan followed suit. The music was not a missing element, either.

New Year fashion expectations were met, too; patrons didn’t skimp on the fabulosity. The gents pulled out all the stops opting for resort-ready duds, and the ladies went for full glam with whimsical intent. It was hard to miss a few triplicitous ’fit stand-offs.

Three features that the Sunnation team managed to retain were great music, an audience of fashionistas, and craft services that rivalled a backyard BBQ.

Are these party favours enough to swing another successful staging? There were mixed reviews. Some patrons believed that the venue—that provided a smaller staging, similar vibe—was subpar in comparison to the breadth of previous venues. Others noted that the catered options were better and the deejays made up for any shortcomings experienced.

The next staging of Sunnation’s Sunrise Breakfast Party, the Trinidad Carnival Edition, is slated for Friday, February 13.
