National netball player Latanya Wilson is among 12 children and 12 adults who are now homeless after their homes were destroyed in a fire on Thursday morning at Rum Lane in downtown Kingston.

Public relations officer of the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB), Superintendent Emilio Eubanks, in confirming the tragedy, told Our Today that two persons including a member of the JFB, suffered injuries from the inferno that engulfed houses located at 30 and 33 1/2 Rum Lane this morning.

“At 12:40 a.m. Thursday, we received a call that there were houses on fire at number 30 and 33 1/2 Rum Lane. We responded with four units from the York Park and Trench Town fire stations. When we arrived at the location, we saw a number of houses on fire. As a result of the fire, we had two persons that suffered injuries, an adult female and one adult firefighter,” he said.

The JFB spokesman said that investigators are still at the location ascertaining the cause of the fire.

Sport Minister Olivia Grange says she is shocked to learn that the player and her family have lost their home and pledged to provide support.

“I am shocked to learn that the national player, Latanya Wilson and her family lost their home at Rum Lane in downtown Kingston to fire early this morning. It is particularly painful that Latanya, who was a member of the bronze-medal-winning Jamaica team at the recent Netball World Cup tournament in South Africa should suffer this devastating loss,” Grange said.

Grange is currently in Budapest, Hungary, attending the World Athletics Championship supporting to the national team.

However, the sport minister said she is mobilising support for the Sunshine Girl and her family.
