Sunshine Girl Latanya Wilson has signed a two-year contract with the Adelaide Thunderbirds as the Suncorp Super League franchise seeks to continue to strengthen their defensive capabilities for the 2022-2023 season.
Wilson showcased her athleticism and versatility in her first season in the league in all three defensive positions. She grew in confidence during the season and developed strong connections in the defensive end, the franchise said.
“We know Latanya has an amazing x-factor about the way she plays and an innate ability to hunt down the ball,” said Adelaide High-Performance Manager Pitre Bourdon.
“She showed great signs in 2021 and we know she’ll only continue to grow going forward. “She fit in with the playing group incredibly well and will be an asset for our side in 2022 and 23.”
Bourdon said Wilson as the final piece in Adelaide’s puzzle when she joined fellow Sunshine Girl Shamera Sterling in the defensive end for the 2021 season that concluded in August.
She joined the Thunderbirds from the Celtic Dragons in the United Kingdom’s Vitality Netball Superleague in 2020 and first represented Jamaica at the Netball World Youth Cup in 2017.
She earned her first senior call at the start of 2020 during the Netball Nations Cup, lining up in the defensive circle alongside Sterling.
Wilson, a MICO University alum is living her dream playing in the Suncorp Super League, which she said was always her life-long dream.
She posted on Instagram how much she enjoyed her first season playing for the Thunderbirds.
“I’ve learned a lot and had an extraordinary time doing so,” she said at the conclusion of last season.
“Unimaginably grateful for each and every person who made this year what it was and thank you to each and every individual who upheld us on our journey. Super awesome putting on the pink dress and playing with these great ladies.”
By virtue of her new contract, she now has two more years to play with them.
