Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls completed the sweep of the Margaret Beckford Sunshine Series against Trinidad and Tobago’s Calypso Girls with a comprehensive 73-22 victory at the National Indoor Sports Centre on Wednesday night (October 20).

Led by Jhaniele Fowler’s 41 goals from 46 attempts, the Connie Francis-coached unit produced its most dominant performance of the series and led 17-7 by the end of the first quarter. The lead was extended to 40-10 at half-time as the Jamaican women never gave their visitors any room to manoeuvre, upping their game at both ends of the floor.

Offensively, Fowler was supported by Shanice Beckford who scored 13 from 17 attempts as Jamaica outscored its Caribbean neighbours 17-5 in the third quarter to extend the lead by 42 goals.

Gezelle Allison, who eventually replaced Fowler, shot 10 from 14 and Rebekah Robinson chipped in with nine goals from 13 attempts.

For Trinidad, Kalifa McCollin scored 14 from 17 shots while Afeisha Noel had seven from nine. Afiya Vincent contributed a single goal from her three attempts.

Last Saturday, Jamaica won the opening game of the series 71-22 and then defeated the Trinidadians 64-32 to take an unassailable lead before closing off with Wednesday night’s dominant win.

Jamaica’s next assignment is against England’s Roses in the Vitality Roses Reunited Series set for November as both teams step up preparations for competition at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
