Floyd Morris, opposition spokesperson on housing and sustainable living, wants the Integrity Commission to launch an investigation into the immediate dismissal of the managing director of the Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ), Dr Patrick Thelwell.
In a release from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) on Wednesday (November 7), it was indicated that Thelwell’s contract was terminated effective last Friday (November 4), after an audit was conducted.
In subsequent media reports, HAJ Chairman Norman Brown has been quoted as stating that the audit uncovered a policy breach that amounted to J$90 million in cost variations.
Reports are that the J$90-million payout was made without the approval of the board.
In a statement today (November 10), Morris said he was concerned about the recent events at the HAJ.
“I am deeply suspicious as to what has really taken place at this national agency that has been charged to assist with the provision of affordable housing for ordinary Jamaicans,” said Morris.
He also requested full transparency on the management of the entity, and its usage of public funds.
The government must release the findings of audit to the public, said Morris.
And, according to him, the Commission’s intervene would ensure that the processes and systems at the HAJ are fully respected and adhered to.
