Kingston Creative on Wednesday (July 24) added a new coat to their canvas after their large-scale mural unveiling in the downtown art district.

The mural was done in honour of the first 61 donors who supported the creatives and the development of the Kingston art district when it started in 2017.

Speaking at the event, Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby said the capital city is continuing to act as a cultural mecca by openly celebrating its rich and diverse cultural heritage.

“The establishment of [the] Water Lane art wall, which focuses on the artwork of many of Jamaica’s most talented artists, depict[ing] our music and musicians, is certainly a remarkable achievement. This transformation of once dirty walls into colourful, vibrant murals is definitely a step in the right direction,” Swaby said.

“It is more than the skills and the imagination of the arts. It’s about the experience and the story that is depicted. It gives a feeling of nostalgia, as if you are part of the event, the performance or the celebration,” he continued.

Swaby described the accomplishment of creating spaces in Kingston where people can experience its culture and history as a ‘priceless and timeless treasure.’

“This partnership demonstrates what we can achieve when people join forces to achieve a common goal through our shared vision, we have managed to develop a concept from a mere idea to a priceless and timeless treasure,” Swaby said.
