Reggae Boyz coach Theodore ‘Tappa’ Whitmore has been fired by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF).
According to sources, the coach, who has been in charge of the Reggae Boyz since 2016 when he replaced Winfried Schafer as head coach, has been officially informed by the JFF that they have decided to move in a different direction.
The decision to fire Whitmore stems from a recommendation from the JFF’s Technical Committee, who voted almost unanimously to fire him after what has been a disappointing final round campaign in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
JFF WANTED TO ENSURE REPLACEMENT CONFIRMED BEFORE DISMISSAL
JFF President Michael Ricketts told Our Today that the JFF executive would take some time to decide whether they would accept the recommendations of the technical committee. It was apparent that they wanted to ensure that they had a replacement confirmed before pulling the trigger on Whitmore.
After eight games, Jamaica has seven point and lies sixth in the eight-team table. Jamaica has only one win so far after wasting glorious opportunities to defeat the United States at the National Stadium in Kingston in November and Costa Rica a few weeks earlier.
Over two stints as head coach -2009-2013 – after replacing John Barnes as head coach and 2016-2021when he replaced German national Winfried Schafer – the 49-year-old Whitemore led the national team in 107 matches winning 47, drawing 22 and losing 38.
He led the team to the 2017 Gold Cup final in the USA where Jamaica lost 2-1 to the home side.
