Taxi operators across the island, who have been edge for weeks, will know this morning when the remaining 16% fare increase will be implemented.

The 16% represents the second phase of the 35% fare increase approved by the Government in 2023 but only 19% was implemented that year and the remaining 16% was due in 2024.

However, the implementation of the 16% increase was deferred by the Government due to varying economic shocks. Transport Minister, Daryl Vaz has called a press conference for this morning at his ministry’s head office to announce Cabinet’s decision regarding the remaining 16% fare increase.

This comes after a Cabinet submission by Minister Vaz and Finance Minister, Fayval Williams with the political executive arm of government having discussed the matter at its weekly meeting yesterday. The Cabinet submission was sparked after Ministers Vaz and Williams met with public transport operators two weeks ago, after they had called for a nationwide strike over the delayed implementation of the balance of the fare increase.

The meeting averted the nationwide strike but both ministers have hinted that the government might not be able to afford to implement the 16% in one go but might do it in two tranches.

Reading Time: 2 minutesWhen fifteen Jamaican Foreign Service officers take up posts this summer in New York, London, Tokyo, Toronto and beyond, they will carry more than diplomatic credentials. They will carry the story of Jamaica, and the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) is making sure they are well-informed.

At the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the JTB hosted a briefing session on Wednesday, May 27, at its Knutsford Boulevard headquarters for officers preparing for tour-of-duty assignments across three continents. The deployment reads like a map of Jamaica’s most valuable tourism markets: New York, Washington, Miami, Toronto, London, Geneva, Brussels, Berlin, Mexico City, Tokyo, Havana and Port-of-Spain.
