Ten Cubans are now in police custody after arriving on the island illegally by boat over the weekend.

Charges are yet to be laid against the group.

Reports are that the Cubans arrived on the island in two separate groups.

One group consisting of seven Cubans reportedly arrived on the island on Saturday, October 26, around 6:30 pm. They were reportedly intercepted by the St James police along the Unity Hall main road and taken into custody.

Another group consisting of three Cubans reportedly arrived on Sunday around 10:43 am at the Half Moon Hotel. They too are now in police custody.

They are reportedly seeking refuge amid Cuba’s ongoing economic crisis, which has been worsened by a failing power grid that has left many without electricity. As of Tuesday, about 70% of Cuba had power, with officials expecting more plants to be operational soon. Charges against the group have not yet been announced.
