Great Britain’s Jack Pinnington Jones pulled off the biggest win of his career at the Dallas Open, shocking world number 20 Flavio Cobolli in straight sets.
The 22-year-old, ranked 181st, breezed past the fourth seed and Wimbledon quarter-finalist 6-2, 6-2 in just 54 minutes, after coming through qualifying to reach the main draw of an ATP 500 event for the first time.
Pinnington Jones, a close friend of British number one Jack Draper, made headlines last year at Wimbledon with his first Grand Slam match win over Tomas Martin Etcheverry, though he fell to Cobolli in the second round. His victory in Dallas sets up a clash with either Australia’s James Duckworth or American wildcard Eliot Spizzirri. After finishing his junior season at Texas Christian University in May, he skipped a final year to chase a full-time tennis career.
Meanwhile, British number two Cameron Norrie’s run at the Rotterdam Open came to an end as he fell 7-6 (11-9), 6-4 to Australian qualifier Christopher O’Connell. Norrie had defeated Roberto Bautista Agut in the opening round but couldn’t get past the 119th-ranked O’Connell.
On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Qatar Open in Doha, citing fatigue, with his next focus on the North American hard court swing after finishing runner up to Carlos Alcaraz at the Australian Open.
In women’s action in Qatar, Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina returned to winning ways with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Wang Xinyu, while world number two Iga Swiatek cruised past Janice Tjen 6-0, 6-3. American star Coco Gauff, however, suffered a 6-4, 6-2 defeat to Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who reached the last 16 of a WTA 1000 event for the first time.
