Shanique Sinclair is hoping to change the reading culture and, by extension, the quality of life in Jamaica by offering literary journeys to her fellow citizens.

Known as the “Shanz the Book Fairy”, Sinclair eagerly awaits the arrival of her eponymous event, The Book Fairy Festival JA, which will take place from July 25 – 28, 2024, at The Summit in New Kingston.

Highlighting that the event will be a “whimsical celebration of literature, creativity, storytelling and wellness”, she explained that the three day festival will be an immersive family-friendly event designed to inspire a love for reading and wellness among children and adults alike.

“The goal is to create a literary haven, fostering a passion for reading and wellness that positively impacts mental and emotional well-being ultimately contributing to Jamaica’s socio-economic climate. The Book Fairy Festival brings the magic of books to life through interactive activities, author chats and creative writing and wellness workshops. It is a day dedicated to highlighting the power of imagination and the joy of discovering new stories through literature.” Sinclair said.

Attendees at the festival can engage in a variety of activities including:

• Author Chats and Signings: Meet some of your favourite local and international authors, listen to captivating conversations, readings and get your books signed.

• Storytelling Session: Enjoy a dynamic storytelling session where culture comes alive

• Creative Writing Workshops: Participate in workshops designed to spark creativity and improve writing skills guided by guest authors.

Mindfulness & Psychoeducation: Engage in therapeutic development through literature with our guest psychologist.

Reading Time: 2 minutes“I went undiagnosed till I was twenty-six years old, I am now thirty-five,” said Shawna, a Jamaican now living in the United States. “I’ve done all the recommended surgeries, but there isn’t an ‘end all, be all’ fix for this. I also get cysts every month, so now I have to live on hormonal birth control to stop my cycles to prevent them from coming. The pain would be too much to handle, so I won’t chance coming off the pills, so I still haven’t tried having kids. I am deeply afraid of the excruciating pain.”
