While many different explanations exist for what is Boxing Day and why it is celebrated, the most acceptable explanation is that it is a day used to perform charitable works.

The holiday, celebrated annually on December 26, is said to have originated in Britain during the Middle Ages and is centred around acts of generosity and charity.

On the day after Christmas, servants would receive ‘Christmas boxes’ from their masters as a form of appreciation for working on Christmas Day. The boxes would often include food from the Christmas dinner or money.

The servants were also given the day off to celebrate the holiday season, which could explain how it became a public holiday.

Boxing Day is also said to have gotten its name from activities that were performed by the Church on December 26.

It’s a day when churchgoers, inspired by the spirit of giving, would share not just material gifts but also their time and goodwill with those in need. Community events, charity drives, and voluntary initiatives would take place, creating an atmosphere of kindness that extends far beyond wrapped presents.

Now, many Jamaicans mark the holiday by relaxing at home, tired from the festivities leading up to the holiday. However, some continue the tradition of giving, particularly members of the church, who wrap presents and give them to members of their community.

But, regardless of how the day originated, the important thing to note is that it was rooted in charity.
So, how will you be charitable today?
