A fire of unknown origin has left three people homeless in Port Antonio on Sunday night, another kind of disaster before Hurricane Melissa strikes.

The fire, which reportedly started shortly after 7:30 pm amid rainy and windy conditions, quickly spread and destroyed a four bedroom house along West Street.

Firefighters, who battled strong winds and rain, managed to bring the fire under control before it could threaten at least four other buildings nearby.

Firefighters have indicated that they are unable to determine the cause of the fire at this time, but will continue their investigation and assessment come daylight.
