TikTok has surpassed Meta platforms WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, to secure itself as the most widely used social media app in the country.

A recent study by statista.com showed that Jamaica is projected to have 2.12 million TikTok users by this year, which is about 75 per cent of the country’s population.

The platform’s appeal lies in its simplicity and its algorithm, which is designed to maximise engagement by learning about the user and displaying personalised content.

TikTok’s influence as the new-generation, short-form video platform of choice has transcended borders. Since entering the global market in 2017, TikTok has grown massively in popularity. By September 2021, TikTok reported that it had reached one billion users globally, outside of China. By October 2022, TikTok announced plans to expand into the e-commerce market in the U.S., following the launch of TikTok Shop in the United Kingdom.
