Carnival patrons are you ready for the road? Jamaica Carnival 2023 is finally here! (April 12 to 18) and many patrons cannot wait to show off their colourful costumes and jump with their favourite bands at the National Road March.

From the high-energy road marches to beach parties and fetes, there is always an activity for carnival lovers all season long.

But as locals and internationals prepare for the Jamaican carnival experience there are a few safety tips that every carnival patron should practice to enjoy a fun but safe carnival season.

Do not Drink and Drive

Carnival is about having a good but if you are planning to consume alcohol this carnival season, be sure to designate a driver who will abstain from drinking and safely drive, you home after the event.

Alcohol consumption can impair your judgement, placing you at a greater risk of being involved in a motor vehicle accident.

Remember to drink in moderation this carnival season to remain cognizant of your surroundings as you fete in the streets. Do not accept drinks from strangers or leave your drink unattended anytime.

Eat before leaving home

It is a known fact that eating before consuming alcohol helps to reduce the risk of individuals becoming intoxicated quickly.

For your safety and also the safety of others, it is best to eat a wholesome meal before you begin indulging in any alcoholic beverages.

Wear minimal Jewelry

As you fete in the streets this weekend, it is important to attract less attention as best as possible. Wearing too much jewellery can make you an easy target for criminals, therefore leave valuables at home such as expensive watches and necklaces and only take the essentials that you will need on the day.

Do not carry a large amount of cash as that will also attract the attention of criminals.

Maintaining a buddy system at large events such as road marches and parties can increase your safety and reduce the risk of you being robbed.

It is important to travel in groups at all times and designate a common location for the group to meet if a member is separated.

Ensure your vehicle is secured

For patrons who are planning to drive to these various carnival events this season, ensure that your vehicle is properly secured before venturing to the event. It is important to use a paid car park to limit the risk of theft.

Follow your natural instincts, if something feels off, then be sure to double-check that you have properly secured your vehicle. Do not leave the vehicle unattended with keys in the ignition and never leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running.
