A high-end trading card shop backed by Tom Brady just got hit in New York City, with a thief making off with nearly US$10,000 in baseball and Pokémon cards.

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the heist went down just before noon on October 20.

A man at CardVault by Tom Brady tried to buy several items, but his payment didn’t go through. Instead of leaving empty-handed, he reportedly fooled the employee into thinking everything was squared away, then casually walked out with US$9,710 worth of prized cards.

Brady has held a major stake in CardVault since February, calling the world of sports collectibles part of his DNA. The lower Manhattan shop that got hit had only been open a few weeks, and Brady himself was there not long ago celebrating its launch.

The brand has been expanding fast, with locations in Chicago, Boston, New Jersey, Dallas, and Long Island. Unfortunately, NYC’s newest store already has a wild chapter in its story.
