If you did not make it to Port Rhoades Sports Club in Discovery Bay, St Ann on Sunday, August 27, you may have missed an exciting day of cricket.
Fairfield United of Manchester lifted the National Championship Trophy, having defeated St Elizabeth’s Junction Ballards Valley in an exciting match reduced to seven overs following a resumption after rain paused the match.
The day’s activity was topped off with a thrilling entertainment package closed out by a delightful performance by Munga Honorable. Here are the top five moments of the day:
- Cricket Lovely Cricket
Fairfield United emerged as the champions of the 2023 SDC National Community T20 Cricket Competition. The rain-affected final, which was reduced to seven overs per team, saw Fairfield United defeating former five-time winners Junction Ballards Valley by 8 wickets on the Duckworth-Lewis method.
In the Masters T10 category, Portland Masters emerged victorious, besting Western Strikers to claim the coveted title.
- Topflight Entertainment
Executive director of the Social Development Commission (SDC), Dr Dwayne Vernon, showed up as ‘DJ Doc’ leading the fiery entertainment for the day. Keeping patrons engaged and rocking in the venue, Vernon handed over to DJ Kurt Riley for the entertainment segment. The ‘Party Animal’ laid an excellent foundation of merriment, which saw Munga Honorable closing out the night remarkably.
- Cash for Catch – The Wray & Nephew Six
Lucky patrons received J$6000 cash courtesy of Wray & Nephew, whenever they caught a ‘six’ during the game. With the exciting nail-biting finish between Fairfield United and Junction Ballards Valley, there were plenty to catch.
- Good Parking
The Port Rhoades Sports Club in Discovery Bay, St Ann provided excellent parking for patrons. The Social Development Commission (SDC) made an excellent choice of venue, which was safe and convenient.
- It Rained!
With the sections of the country experiencing drought conditions, it was refreshing to have some rain. The venue was cool, and ‘Mother Nature’ would have happily provided relief.
