As the gap between active and closed novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases narrows, the Caribbean could end its seventh week of stability amid the second wave of the deadly pandemic.

The likelihood of the region losing its foothold against the infectious disease is low, however, with 18 of the region’s 32 affected countries and territories reporting new cases within the last 24 hours.

As at 8:12 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) on Tuesday, November 17, collated data from respective health departments across the region have indicated a combined total of 267,727 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Of that number, some 181,048 cases, or roughly 67.6 per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are currently 86,679 active cases regionally.

The encouraging figures were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (175,906 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data from Puerto Rico).

In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications has steadily climbed to 5,142.

At the time of publication, only four Caribbean countries and territories have managed to bring their active caseload to zero, namely: St Kitts and Nevis, British Virgin Islands, Monserrat and Anguilla.
