Heading into the second month of 2021, Caribbean countries have seemingly begun to turn the tides amidst the third wave of the deadly novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
By no means cause for complacency, the region has managed to keep more closed cases than their active counterparts for an impressive 19 weeks running, with new infections trending down.
In the last four days, the region recorded more closed cases (11,201) than new infections (10,880)—the first time since the start of 2021.
Still weeks away from the one-year anniversary since COVID-19 first infiltrated Caribbean shores, analysis of regional data by Our Today has noted 20 of the 32 affected countries and territories reported new cases within the last 24 hours.
As at 2:28 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) on Tuesday, February 2, collated data from respective health departments across the region have indicated a combined total of 463,448 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
Of that number, some 284,181 cases, or roughly 61.3 per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are currently 179,267 active cases regionally.

The statistics were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (277,022 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data from Puerto Rico and Martinique).
In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications has steadily climbed to 7,159.
At the time of publication, Montserrat stands as the Caribbean’s lone territory without active cases.
