The ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to wallop the Caribbean, as the region confirmed more new infections (18,176) than closed cases (6,930) since the start of the year.

Without a doubt, the pandemic’s third wave is sweeping the region—Our Today analysis has noted 28 of the 32 affected countries and territories reported new cases within the last 24 hours.

As at 10:22 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) on Sunday, January 17, collated data from respective health departments across the region have indicated a combined total of 415,386 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Of that number, some 251,246 cases, or roughly 60.04  per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are currently 164,140 active cases regionally.

The encouraging figures were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (244,718 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data from Puerto Rico and Martinique).

In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications has steadily climbed to 6,528.

The British-governed island Anguilla rejoins, Montserrat as the Caribbean’s only territories without active cases.
