Despite another neck-and-neck ‘race’, the Caribbean has managed to record 61-straight weeks of keeping mostly closed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, as the regional outbreak ebbs this week.

Countries and territories across the region see little change to the pandemic situation, however, as new infections (47,008) over the last 14 days were marginally less than closed cases (47,641).

Our Today analysis of regional data finds 27 of the 32 affected countries and territories have reported new cases within the last 48 hours. A status update from the British Virgin Islands was not forthcoming since the last regional report.

Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago rank as the five worst-hit territories in the region.

Additionally, the Cayman Islands, Belize, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago remain under a drastic spike in cases coinciding with the Delta variant’s introduction in local populations.

As at 5:11 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) on Thursday, November 4, collated data from respective health departments across the region has indicated a combined total of 2,093,349 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Of that number, some 1,700,635 cases, or roughly 81.23 per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are an estimated 392,714 active cases regionally.

The statistics were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (1,672,811 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data from Puerto Rico, French Guiana, Guadeloupe and Martinique).

In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications spiked to 27,824.
