As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic worsens across much of the Caribbean, the region continues to grapple with a surge in infections.

The region, while maintaining mostly closed cases for 38-straight weeks, benefitted from a rally in recoveries. In the last six days, however, the Caribbean registered more new infections (19,357) than closed cases (14,513).

Cuba, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic still rank as the four worst-hit territories in the Caribbean. Cases have are also on the uptick in Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

Analysis of regional data by Our Today has indicated that 19 of the 32 affected countries and territories reported new cases within the last 24 hours.

As at 1:27 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) on Monday, May 10, collated data from respective health departments across the region has indicated a combined total of 743,787 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Of that number, some 499,581 cases, or roughly 67.2 per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are currently 244,206 active cases regionally.

The statistics were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (488,998 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data from Puerto Rico, French Guiana, Guadeloupe and Martinique).

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has infiltrated every territory in the Caribbean.

In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications spiked to 10,583.

Dominica joins Montserrat as the Caribbean’s lone territories without active cases.
