The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has infiltrated every territory in the Caribbean.

Signs the third wave of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has made it to the shores of the Caribbean are telling, as new infections skyrocket across the region.

Even while countries inch closer to an 18th consecutive week of more closed cases than their active counterparts, Our Today analysis has noted 28 of the 32 affected countries and territories reported new cases within the last 24 hours.

It is the highest rate of infection since COVID-19 first infiltrated the Caribbean in March 2020 and comes at a time when the region, months away from a full year’s battle, is already under strain.

As at 3:21 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) on Friday, January 8, collated data from respective health departments across the region have indicated a combined total of 383,011 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Of that number, some 237,790 cases, or roughly 62.08  per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are currently 145,221 active cases regionally.

The encouraging figures were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (231,474 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data from Puerto Rico and Martinique).

In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications has steadily climbed to 6,316.

The British-governed island of Montserrat is the Caribbean’s only jurisdiction without active cases.
