With many areas of the world under panic due to the emergence of the Omicron coronavirus (COVID-19) strain, countries and territories across the Caribbean are yet to confirm the new ‘variant of concern’.

Though the regional situation continues to improve with a rally in recoveries this week, the imminent threat of a Christmas ‘infection explosion’ still looms menacingly.

Six weeks into a comparative lull in new COVID-19 infections, the Caribbean, lacking ‘coronavirus-free’ territories, managed to record its 65th week of maintaining mostly closed cases. As evidenced over the last seven days, there were far more closed cases (19,035) than new infections (13,883). across the Caribbean Basin

Our Today analysis of regional data finds 27 of the 32 affected countries and territories have reported new cases within the last 48 hours.

Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago rank as the five worst-hit territories in the region.

As at 5:51 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) on Thursday, December 2, collated data from respective health departments across the region has indicated a combined total of 2,171,270 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Of that number, some 1,775,596 cases, or roughly 81.72 per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are an estimated 395,674 active cases regionally.

The statistics were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (1,746,506 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data from Puerto Rico, French Guiana, Guadeloupe and Martinique).

In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications spiked to 29,090.

Noticeably, the Cayman Islands and Trinidad and Tobago remain under a spike in COVID-19 cases, coinciding with the Delta variant’s introduction in local populations.
