A surge in recoveries has boosted the Caribbean’s response against the onset of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as countries inch closer to 17 consecutive weeks of more closed cases than active infections.

The outbreak is an ever-changing situation, which has the potential to drastically change and deteriorate if a more infectious, third wave of the disease makes it way to a region already under strain.

The British-governed island of Montserrat is the Caribbean’s only jurisdiction without active cases, however, Our Today analysis has noted that 23 of the 32 affected countries and territories reported new cases within the last 24 hours.

As at 6:33 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) on Monday, January 4, collated data from respective health departments across the region have indicated a combined total of 367,253 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Of that number, some 233,011 cases, or roughly 63.44  per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are currently 134,252 active cases regionally.

The encouraging figures were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (226,777 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data from Puerto Rico and Martinique).

In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications has steadily climbed to 6,234.
