A week into summer, countries across the Caribbean are hours away from hitting a new coronavirus (COVID-19) milestone of four million cumulative cases.

The Caribbean first hit one million COVID-19 cases in mid-July 2021, over a year after the first wave of infections was observed at the onset of the pandemic in March 2020. The region doubled that total three months later and reached the three million caseload mark earlier in January as the Omicron variant raged across the world.

The region remains tightly in the grips of the pandemic, as evidenced by new infections (276,820) far outperforming the rate of closed cases (78,226) over the past 40 days.

Encouragingly, with the Caribbean closing in on its 96th week of maintaining mostly closed cases, only Cuba, Dominica, Sint Maarten, Turks and Caicos Islands, St Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla and the Cayman Islands have not recorded any new deaths since late May.

Further analysis of regional data finds that 28 of the 32 affected countries and territories have reported new cases within the last 48 hours†. Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe and Martinique rank as the five worst-hit territories in the region.

As at 3:41 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) today (June 28), collated data from respective health departments across the region has indicated a combined total of 3,998,281 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Of that number, some 2,549,541 cases, or roughly 63.92 per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are an estimated 1,428,740 active cases regionally.

The statistics were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (2,514,261 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data out of Puerto Rico and France’s overseas territories region-wide).

In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications increased to 35,380.
