Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Senator Aubyn Hill, has led a second trade mission to Guyana with more than 70 persons representing 40 companies forming the Jamaica delegation.

The Trade Mission to Guyana had major support from the Government of Guyana with  Dr Ashni Singh, Minister of Finance, Oneidge Walrond, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce and the Bishop Juan A. Edgehill, Minister of Public Works from the Government of Guyana, speaking to the delegates about the business opportunities in Guyana during the opening ceremony on January 24, 2023.

“I am pleased to be leading a second Ministerial Trade Mission to Guyana, as we seek to explore and cement business opportunities and partnerships with Guyanese ministries, government bodies and private sector companies. I am particularly pleased with the engagement of the Ministers of Government of Guyana who made the time to talk to the delegates despite the demands of it being budget week in Guyana,” noted Hill.

“Jamaica recognises the strong bond and partnership between the people of Jamaica and Guyana, and we believe that this mission will unearth many opportunities to deepen the bond between our people and bring economic growth and prosperity to both nations.”

The goal of Jamaica’s trade mission is to further cement business-to-business partnerships that will drive cross-border transactions in both exports and investments that can be of mutual benefit to Jamaica and Guyana. The business mission visit will also emphasise the enabling of supply chain integration, strategic partnerships, and the expansion of financial and technical capacity-building services.

Hill noted that “Jamaica recognises the strong bond and partnership between the people of Jamaica and Guyana, and we believe that this mission will unearth many opportunities to deepen the bond between our people and bring economic growth and prosperity to both nations”.

During his presentation to the delegates, Dr Ashni Singh, Guyana’s minister of finance, outlined the various development plans and legislation in place to support investment opportunities in gas and oil, tourism, construction and business process outsourcing that are available to Jamaica.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF GUYANA’S TOURISM PRODUCT

In his address to the Jamaican delegation, Bishop Juan A. Edgehill, minister of public works from the Government of Guyana, outlined the planned transformation of the infrastructural landscape of Guyana and the sub-contracting opportunities for Jamaican companies. In keeping with the Government of Guyana’s plans to ensure that the country doesn’t focus on oil and gas to the exclusion of other sectors, Oneidge Walrond, Guyana’s minister of tourism, industry and commerce highlighted the planned growth in their tourism sector and noted the various steps that will be taken to increase the room count to support tourism diversification over the next five years.

She spoke to the sustainable development of Guyana’s tourism product and the focus on eco-tourism as a complementary tourism offering to the sun, sea, and sand of islands like Jamaica.

The second ministerial trade mission was sponsored in part by itel and Jamaica Broilers, and organised by the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce and the Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO), in partnership with the Guyana Office for Investment, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association.
