In a remarkable turnaround, TransJamaican Highway Limited (TJH) has announced impressive financial results for the quarter ended December 31, 2023.

The company revealed a net profit for the group totalling US$23.87 million, marking a significant upswing from the net loss of US$7.14 million recorded during the same period in 2022.

This exceptional achievement underscores a notable shift in TJH’s financial landscape, highlighted by a staggering 356 per cent increase in profits compared to the previous year, even after factoring in a one-off settlement loss of US$13.88 million.

CEO Ivan Anderson shared: “Our strategic restructuring, including the acquisition of the highway’s operator JIO, has played a pivotal role in driving this turnaround, resulting in a decline in operating expenses by US$17.5 million, from US$39.9 million in 2022 to US$22.4 million in 2023.”

Furthermore, TJH’s revenues witnessed a robust growth trajectory, soaring by 16 per cent from US$65 million in 2022 to US$75.2 million in 2023.

This growth not only indicates a successful recovery from the pandemic but also surpasses pre-pandemic levels by over 45 per cent, showcasing the company’s resilience and adaptability in challenging market conditions.

Investors have also reaped significant benefits from TJH’s stellar performance, as evidenced by the substantial increase in dividends. The company paid dividends of $0.1866 per share in 2023, marking a remarkable 118 per cent increase compared to the dividends of $0.0855 per share paid in 2022.

Anderson explained: “For investors who purchased shares during the Initial Public Offering, this translates to an impressive dividend yield of 12 per cent, making it one of the highest on the Jamaica Stock Exchange.”

Moreover, TJH received a noteworthy endorsement from Standard and Poor’s, with the ratings agency upgrading the ratings on TJH notes from B+ to BB- in September 2023.

The stable outlook reflects confidence in TJH’s ability to maintain robust traffic volumes, with expectations of a 3.0 per cent increase in 2023 and around 2.0 per cent in 2024. This, coupled with efficient operational management and limited exposure to major maintenance risks, bodes well for the company’s future prospects.

TransJamaican Highway’s remarkable financial performance for Q4 2023 not only underscores its resilience and strategic foresight but also positions it as a key player in Jamaica’s infrastructure landscape.

With continued growth momentum and a commitment to value creation for shareholders, TJH forecasts sustained growth and profitability in the years to come.
