Transport Minister Daryl Vaz is set to meet with public transport stakeholders and state agencies today, June 11, to address concerns raised by transport operators regarding the suspension of drivers’ licences due to the accumulation of demerit points.
The meeting will take place at the Transport Authority Head Office on Maxfield Avenue, Kingston 10.
This follows a meeting on Wednesday, June 5, where the concerns of the operators were documented and submitted to the Transport Minister. Today’s meeting will examine the offences under the Road Traffic Act, specifically those that attract demerit points.
Following the examination of the offences, recommendations will be submitted to the Transport Ministry for consideration and inclusion in the review of the Road Traffic Act currently being undertaken to facilitate amendments.
Despite the ongoing discussions between the government and transport stakeholders, some public transport operators withdrew their services on Monday, June 10, to express their frustration.
The operators are calling for amendments to the demerit points system, particularly for offences such as failure to wear seat belts and illegal parking. Other concerns, such as the affordability of fines for mobile phone use, have also been raised.
The strike action has been reported to have had a moderate impact on the public transport sector, with only 25 per cent of operators participating.
The operators threaten to continue the strike action until Friday, June 14.
