It will be trials and tribulations for the athletes during the blue ribbon 100m finals on Friday night (June 27) during the National Championships, as they are set to compete with a booming party that could derail their World Championship hopes in a split second.

The Stadium East is the warm-up area for all athletes, and accessing the National Stadium will prove extremely difficult, as the car park that links the Stadium East to the National Stadium will be hosting the Guinness Pull Up party set to begin at 9:00 pm.

The 100m semifinals are set to begin at 7:30 pm, and the finals will be two hours later, with the last race set for 9:58 pm.

MVP’s coach Paul Francis, was left bemused as to how the operators of the Stadium complex, Independence Park Limited, could sanction a party that blocks the path from the Stadium East to inside the National Stadium after the athletes have warmed up.

“It is very, very disturbing that an event of that magnitude, such as the Guinness Pull Up, has been scheduled for the Stadium East parking lot,” Francis told Our Today.

“The Stadium East parking lot, for those who don’t know, is the transition point for athletes between the Stadium East Facility, where they warm up for their competitions, and it transitions to the National Stadium, where people actually get to see them run,” he added.

“So, an event (party) of that magnitude is going to require them to get ready for the event, put things in place like security, it’s a paid event and all of that and they are having a stage show in addition,” Francis revealed.

He continued: “So this means that there will be zero access, I think for persons that are directly related to the track and field meet, which means coaches, athletes, therapists, and this is on Friday night, which is the busiest day of the Championships”.

There is a video of the Stadium East car park being transformed into a party venue with an erected aluminium alloy roof truss system in place.

An effort to get a response from Major Desmon Brown via WhatsApp on Wednesday evening proved futile.

But Francis, who coaches some of the best athletes the world as seen, said the aspect of safety and security for the athletes will be compromised.

“We are going to be having on show athletes like Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the legend, Kishane Thompson, the Clayton twins, with some of our top junior athletes in Sabrina Dockery and Gary Card.

“And you are going to ask them to warm up and find their way into the stadium amidst the crowd and the disastrous noise which comes with such an event, so safety and security will be severely compromised,” said a livid Francis.

“I am not sure what the thinking is, but to me, the two can’t coexist. But maybe I am archaic, maybe they are people brighter than I am,” he concluded.
