As tributes flow for veteran broadcaster and actress Leonie Forbes, who died yesterday (October 25) at 85, Prime Minister Andrew Holness has declared that her name is synonymous with Jamaica and with Jamaican theatre and broadcast.

Commenting on Forbes passing on Twitter, Holness said: “She was always elegant and gracious, and her voice commanded both respect and admiration. Jamaica has lost an iconic and pioneering figure in media, film and television.”

He added: “As an actress, she starred in several films and comedies and flew the Jamaican flag high as a cultural icon. Like many of those who gave back to the next generation in media, Leonie helped to coauthor Voice and Speech modules for broadcasters.

“Her crisp, clear voice, warm personality and contribution to Jamaica’s development in media and the arts will never be forgotten. We say thanks to Leonie for her contribution to Jamaican Arts and Culture and we express our deep sadness at her passing.”

Olivia Grange, minister of culture, gender, entertainment and sport, has said she was left with a feeling of great sadness on receiving the news.

In a statement Grange said Forbes, who died in hospital, was “one of the really great actresses and media personalities that Jamaica has produced”.

The minister added: “Leonie was an actress extraordinaire and a broadcaster of the highest calibre.

“She was one of the most revered actresses on the Jamaican stage for over five decades, earning the respect and admiration of not just audiences, but her fellow practitioners. Her willingness to share her vast knowledge and experience with young thespians was one of the last memories of her which will last for a very long time.

“Leonie was the consummate professional, with a preparation process which was most worthy of emulation. Whilst many others would arrive at the theatre at the designated one hour, Leonie was always there at least two hours before, in preparation mode.

“She was the ‘leading lady’, for a generation of broadcasters and thespians who excelled at their craft. She was as great in a radio studio as she was on stage and in television and films and as a producer.

“Leonie has certainly made her mark and will be a hard act to follow.

“As the minister, responsible for the portfolios of culture and entertainment, I salute Leonie Evadnie Forbes for the iconic part she played in the development theatre, radio broadcasting, television and films in Jamaica. I extend my deepest sympathy to her family members, her colleagues, her friends
and her many fans admirers the world over.

“Rest in peace, Leonie Forbes.”

At the same time, the People’s National Party also expressed sadness at Forbes passing.

Stating that she was Jamaica’s First Lady of Theatre and Film, the PNP noted that Forbes appeared in several films and pantomimes produced by the LTM National Pantomime in Jamaica, West Indies such as Smile Orange, Whiplash and Champagne and Sky Juice.

Forbes was also a television personality and film producer for many years, with Milk and Honey, The Orchid House, and Children of Babylon among her film and television credits.

“Leonie will be remembered for her charming personality, talent, and wit,” the PNP said.

“Her numerous theatrical achievements have earned her a well-deserved place in the Jamaican Hall of Fame.

“The PNP extends condolences to her family, friends and loved ones.

“May her soul rest in peace.”
