Tropical Battery Group, a leader in energy solutions in Jamaican has inked a landmark distribution deal with Wright Energy Storage Technologies, Inc. (WEST) out of the United States.
This strategic agreement appoints Tropical Battery and its affiliate, Kaya Energy, as the authorised resellers of WEST products across Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, bringing the world’s most advanced electrostatic energy storage to the region. The partnership introduces WEST’s Optimised Supercapacitor technology to the Caribbean market, offering a revolutionary alternative to traditional lithium-ion systems.
In a regulatory filing with the Jamaica Stock Exchange, where its shares are publicly traded, Tropical Battery reports, “unlike electrochemical batteries that degrade over time, WEST modules utilise a carbon-based electrostatic storage mechanism. This allows for a 45-year design life and an industry-leading 20-year warranty, ensuring long-term energy security for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.”
Game-changer in the making
Traditional battery chemistries often struggle with the high ambient temperatures and humidity found in the Caribbean but WEST technology is specifically designed to thrive in these conditions, thereby making this deal a game-changer for the following reasons:
- Unmatched Safety: Because WEST modules store energy electrostatically rather than electrochemically, they produce no heat during normal operation. This eliminates the risk of thermal runaway and fire hazards, removing the need for expensive active cooling infrastructure.
- Extreme Temperature Resilience: The modules operate seamlessly across a broad range from –40°C to +65°C without performance loss, making them ideal for mission-critical storage in tropical climates.
- Efficiency and Cost Savings: With a 97.1% round-trip efficiency and 100% usable depth of discharge, WEST offers a significantly lower total cost of ownership. The system is modular and scalable, allowing businesses to grow their capacity incrementally without replacing existing infrastructure.
Hailing the partnership

CEO of Tropical Battery Group, Alexander Melville, cites its alliance with WEST as a game-changer for Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, noting that by moving away from chemical-based storage, the Jamaican-based energy company is offering our customers a system that is safer, more efficient, and essentially permanent.
He highlights that the move sees Tropical Battery’s expansion across the Caribbean, with its priority being the provision of technology that withstands our unique environment. This partnership, he continues, aligns with Tropical Battery’s mission to drive energy independence through innovation.
By integrating WEST technology, Tropical Battery and Kaya Energy are positioned to lead the transition toward more sustainable and reliable power grids in Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.
For Larry (Chip) Seibert, CEO of WEST, “We are excited to partner with the Tropical Battery Group. Their deep roots in the Caribbean and their commitment to renewable energy make them the perfect partner to deploy our supercapacitor-based technology in these vital markets.”
WEST is a New York City-based pioneer in the energy storage sector, specifically focused on overcoming the inherent safety and longevity challenges of traditional chemical batteries. Headquartered at 379 West Broadway in Manhattan, the company has developed a patented, optimised supercapacitor technology that utilises a carbon-based electrostatic mechanism rather than chemical reactions.
Founded in 1950, Tropical Battery has evolved from a local battery manufacturer into a vertically integrated energy conglomerate specialising in solar integration, mission-critical power systems, and advanced storage technologies. The Group’s capabilities were significantly expanded with the 2024 acquisition of Rose Batteries, a Silicon Valley-based manufacturer of specialised lithium and alkaline battery packs.
