Dr Christopher Tufton said on Thursday that he’s yet to be served with a formal request for public apology from the legal team of veteran attorney and PNP member KD Knight, who is claiming that Tufton used a maliciously doctored voice recording of him at the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) mass Rally in Half- Way Tree on Sunday.
“I’ve seen in the media space a published document or a written document that is supposed to be served on me. I’ve not received it yet, and, as soon as I’ve received it, my lawyers are on standby to respond, and to counterclaim against the individual who has made their claim,” Tufton said on Thursday, August 14, during a press conference titled Campaign Update & Matters Arising at the JLP headquarters in New Kingston.
“So, until I receive that document, I have no other comment on that matter,” he said.
Knight claims the clip, played by Tufton at the rally, was edited to suggest that he opposed PNP President Mark Golding becoming prime minister, and was done to tarnish both his and Golding’s reputation.
A letter purportedly from law firm Knight, Junor and Samuels to Tufton on Wednesday, states:
“Your conscious decision to play the above recording can only be rightfully described as defamatory. Furthermore, your defamatory conduct has caused great harm to our client’s reputation.”
“Responsibility must be taken for the resulting defamation of our client. We now demand that you publicly retract the attribution of the manipulated audio recording to our client.
“We are prepared to negotiate a settlement between your legal representatives and our law firm. We expect that the apology and retraction demanded will be agreed on or before Friday, August 15, 2025, at 11:00 am.”
The firm also requested that the terms of the retraction and apology be agreed upon between the attorneys for both parties and be sent to all media houses for publication, as well as on the JLP social media pages.
