Twitter Blue verification checkmarks soon to cost US$8 per month

Newly self-appointed CEO of Twitter, Elon Musk declared today (November 1) that blue checkmarks on the social media platform will soon cost US$8 per month.

Musk noted that the price will be adjusted proportionately by each country’s purchasing power parity.

Musk stated that, in addition to the fee, blue checkmark holders will also receive: Priority in replies, mentions and search, which is essential to defeat spam and scam; ability to post long videos and audio; half as many ads and a paywall bypass for certain publishers.

In a post on his Twitter account, Musk said: “There will be a secondary tag below the name for someone who is a public figure, which is already the case for politicians.”

Blue checkmarkss are intended as a safeguard the public against misinformation but is now also seen as status symbol.

“Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark is bulls$#%. Power to the people! Blue for $8/month,” said Musk on his Twitter page today.

Twitter already has a paid tier called Twitter Blue, where users pay US$4.99 a month to have access to ad-free articles from some news publishers, a special tab showing what links are most popular on the platform, and the ability to change the colour of their app icon.

This new paid tier will merge with Twitter Blue.
