Police have seized more than 1,900 pounds of compressed ganja during a major anti-narcotics operation in Dumfries, St. Thomas, on Sunday night.

The operation, led by investigators assigned to the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID), was carried out about 11:00 p.m. on a beach in the community. Police said two men were seen with several knitted bags, which, when searched, were found to contain the illicit drug.

The men were arrested on the spot, and a boat equipped with two 75-horsepower engines was also seized. The ganja has an estimated street value of J$5.7 million. The identities of the men are being withheld pending further investigations.

Acting Director of FNID, Superintendent of Police Oral Henry, underscored the wider implications of the bust.

“The proceeds from these drugs are often used to purchase illegal firearms, which are then trafficked into Jamaica. By disrupting this operation, we have not only prevented a significant amount of drugs from reaching their destination but have also cut off a key financial pipeline for criminal gangs,” he said.

Superintendent Henry added that continued efforts, in partnership with local and international agencies, are critical to dismantling criminal networks.

Members of the public are reminded to report information on illegal firearms or narcotics by contacting FNID at 876-923-6184, the National Intelligence Bureau at 811, Crime Stop at 311, or the nearest police station.

“Sixty units will occupy the territory of the 15 municipalities of that state to scrutinise and to conduct reconnaissance and clear the area. It should be remembered that from Trinidad and Tobago, a lot of fuel smuggling occurs, as well as smuggling of weapons and ammunition, and a lot of human trafficking,” Lopez was quoted as saying during a televised address to citizens on Sunday by Trinidad Express.
