
Jamaica has recorded two additionally cases of the Mpox virus, previously known as Monkeypox, bringing the total number of cases on the island to 21.
This follows reports from the Ministry of Health and Wellness last week that a female in St Catherine tested positive for the virus. The patient had been the first to test positive for the virus in 2023 and the first case the country has recorded in four months.
The two additionally cases were confirmed on Sunday (March 26) and recorded in the parishes of Kingston and St Andrew. One patient was a male while the other was a female and both cases are said to be locally transmitted.
Jamaica now has three active cases of the virus, however 17 people have recovered.
The ministry also confirmed last month that a Mpox patient’s death was coincidental. This means that the patient had Mpox, but also had other illnesses that resulted in their death.
If you are experiencing the following symptoms, the ministry is urging you to self-isolate and call ahead to your doctor or health centre.
- Fever
- Chills
- Intense headaches
- Extreme exhaustion
- Muscle and backache
- Swollen lymph nodes, wax and cannon
- Rash (usually one to three days after a fever)
