Tyler Perry’s new R-rated holiday movie, ‘Finding Joy‘, has skyrocketed to the number one spot on Amazon Prime Video as a certified hit for the upcoming season.

When TV shows are factored in, ‘Finding Joy‘ is also ahead of two of the streamer’s biggest returning series, ‘Maxton Hall – The World Between Us‘ and ‘Hazbin Hotel‘, which was the No. 1 Amazon show in the world upon its second season premiere. Though it may be a typical holiday dramedy, Perry’s name and writing chops are clearly enough to attract a dedicated audience, no matter the project.

Best known for his Mabel ‘Madea’ Simmons character, Perry wrote the drama, which follows a designer who is stranded in Colorado during the holidays after making a devastating discovery, and is set on a new path to love and fulfilment.

It stars Shannon Thornton, Tosin Morohunfola, Brittany S. Hall, Inayah, Aaron O’Connell, Eric Stanton Betts, and Jeffery Thomas Johnson.

Finding Joy‘ premiered on Amazon Prime Video on November 5, and a week later, it is the platform’s number one title overall in the United States, according to Flixpatrol. It comes in just above the holiday classic ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas‘, starring Jim Carrey.

Perry’s film isn’t garnering the best reviews (nor enough to get a Rotten Tomatoes score yet), with a 4.5 out of 10 on IMDb. But like the middling entry of ‘The Six Triple Eight‘, which has a 56 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences seem to be willing to meet ‘Finding Joy‘ on their own terms. While the previous movie did its job in highlighting a true story, ‘Finding Joy‘ delivers the heartwarming and funny beats of a light holiday feature.
