Global ride-share and delivery company Uber is expanding in the Dominican Republic, further building out its service in the tourism hub of Punta Cana.

It has been reported that Uber plans to launch Uber Select in the Dominican Republic, having reached an agreement with Punta Cana’s taxi operators. The agreement will see Punta Cana taxi operators being registered on the Uber platform and operating under the company’s Uber Select option.

Commenting on the deal, Dom Rep’s Tourism Minister, David Collado, who helped facilitate the agreement remarked, “with this agreement, we set a beautiful example and make it clear that agreement, dialogue and strategic alliance are the key to unity to guarantee the safest and most efficient taxi transportation service to our tourists in the eastern region and throughout the country.”

Uber has been operating in the Dominican Republic since 2017, when it first launched operations in the country’s capital of Santo Domingo.

Uber’s other Caribbean markets include Puerto Rico, Jamaica and parts of Trinidad.

The launch in Jamaica took place earlier this year with a number of hiccups along the way.
