Uber has introduced a new safety feature that requires new users registering with the cash payment method to validate their identity through a selfie for their first trip, in addition to existing options like credit or debit cards.

The ride-sharing company is also launching a new tool that allows users to configure features according to their personal preferences.

“We reaffirm our commitment to safety for everyone using the app in Jamaica. At Uber, we want to keep raising the bar on safety, which is why our efforts are focused on enhancing measures to ensure people feel safer using the application; the options we are launching today are the result of listening to users and lessor partners,” Uber said in a statement.

It said the rider selfie method aims to record the image of the person making the request. This photo will not be shared with lessor partners and will only be stored on Uber’s servers, available for authorities if required.

Users can also use the new “Safety Preferences” configuration, which allows them to configure features according to their personal preferences. For example, ‘Share My Trip’ can be sent to trusted contacts automatically for trips requested when leaving a restaurant or bar, or only after 9:00 pm.

To configure safety preferences:

In the ‘account’ tab, scroll to settings, security, and then ‘safety preferences’. To configure during a lease, open the blue shield that appears on the map, enter settings, and then ‘safety preferences’.

These new tools join the more than 30 safety tools and features in the Uber app in Jamaica, available for all products.

Other safety features available in Jamaica are:

● PIN Code: Users receive a randomly generated 4-digit code that they must provide in person to the lessor partner to start the lease, ensuring they are getting into the correct vehicle.

● RideCheck: Uses GPS and other sensors in the user’s and lessor partner’s smartphones to detect anomalies, such as unexpected long stops, and offers a menu of options if needed.

● Insured Trips: All leases through the Uber app in Jamaica are covered by insurance from Guardian Life.
