The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean Foundation (UCCF) carried out a Labour Day outreach initiative at The Good Samaritan Inn in Kingston, continuing its longstanding commitment to community service and support for the care facility.

The initiative was a collaborative effort involving the UCC Foundation, the Department of Student Services (DSS) and the UCC Alumni Association. It brought together 25 volunteers, including UCC staff, scholarship students, alumni and community stakeholders, in a joint effort to improve the facility’s environment and support the overall well-being of its residents and caregivers.

As part of the Labour Day activities, volunteers cleaned and restored the facility’s clinic, helping to improve its environment and functionality. The outreach also included the distribution of hot meals and the handover of gently used clothing, non-perishable food items and toiletries to support the daily needs of residents and caregivers.

The Good Samaritan Inn holds longstanding significance for UCC and the UCC Foundation. The institution was adopted by UCC in 2007 as part of the development of the Foundation, which formalised its operations that same year. For the past 19 years, UCC and the UCC Foundation have continued to support The Good Samaritan Inn through outreach activities, donations, mentorship initiatives and other community support programmes.

Observed annually across Jamaica, Labour Day promotes volunteerism, civic pride and collective responsibility. Through this year’s initiative, the UCC Foundation continued to demonstrate the importance of building long-term partnerships that create tangible and lasting benefits for vulnerable communities.

“Labour Day is a reminder that national development begins with service,” said Shelly-Ann Sital, UCC Foundation Administrator. “Through our continued partnership with The Good Samaritan Inn, we are not only supporting immediate needs but also encouraging our students, scholarship recipients and alumni to see community engagement as an essential part of leadership.”

The outreach formed part of the Foundation’s broader mission to support educational advancement, youth empowerment and community transformation through strategic partnerships and service-oriented initiatives.
