In celebration of Youth Month 2023, the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) engaged youths through several initiatives geared at nurturing leadership and entrepreneurship.

On Tuesday, November 21, staged its President for a Day Initiative, which was first launched in October by UCC President Professor Haldane Davies.

Khalia Phillips, a second-year information technology student stepped into the role of UCC president for the day by providing mentorship for first-year students, demonstrating a commitment to leadership and communication skills.

She was selected by a panel that reviewed essays and CVs and assigned points based on guidelines developed for the purpose.

Davies, in turn, participated in Phillips’ classes and student-led activities.

The university also hosted a Youth Forum and Business Expo on Thursday, November 30, providing a platform for students to showcase their entrepreneurial prowess spanning music, social media content creation, jewelry design, T-shirt production, fine art, and homemade ice-cream.

The morning session featured a Youth Forum on Gender Education, which explored the gender imbalance in secondary and tertiary institutions.

Distinguished panellists included Tina Issak, from the Bureau of Gender Affairs; and Adrian Dunkley, CEO of StarAppleAI, who were engaged in a vibrant discussion. The need for interactive teaching methods, particularly for young men, was also emphasised.

Eshiva Wright, Miss Caribbean UK 2023, underscored the importance of integrating entrepreneurship and innovation in education.
