The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a travel alert to its nationals about travelling to Jamaica citing the destination’s high crime and homicide rates.
This adverse travel comes one month after Canada issued a similar one to their nationals about travelling to the island. The FCDO warns that gang violence and shootings are prevalent in Jamaica, particularly in inner-city areas.
UK nationals are being told that tourist areas are typically not affected by gang-related crime and violence. However, the FCDO advises that holidaymakers should still be “cautious”, particularly when travelling “in and around” Kingston, Spanish Town, Savanna-la-Mar and parts of Montego Bay including Flanker, Barrett Town, Glendevon, Rose Heights and Mount Salem
The travel advisory notes that in response to outbreaks of violence and shootings, the Jamaican government has implemented enhanced security measures through States of Emergency (SOE) or Zones of Special Operations (ZOSOs).
