UK’s Boris Johnson endorses Kamina Johnson Smith for Commonwealth post

Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson today (May 19) threw his support in favour of Jamaica’s candidate, Kamina Johnson Smith, for the post of Commonwealth Secretary-General.

Johnson, in a tweet this morning, said with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting just a month away, his government is confident the Jamaican is uniquely qualified to lead the powerful 54-country coalition.

“With a month to go until the Commonwealth comes together in Rwanda, delighted to confirm the UK will support @kaminajsmith’s campaign to be the next Secretary General. She has the vast experience & support to unite our unique family of nations and seize the opportunities ahead,” he tweeted.

Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, who currently serves as Jamaican Foreign Affairs Minister, was announced as a candidate by the Andrew Holness government on April 1.

She is challenging incumbent head of the Commonwealth Secretariat, Baroness Patricia Scotland, who has sat as Secretary-General since 2016.
