Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson today (May 19) threw his support in favour of Jamaica’s candidate, Kamina Johnson Smith, for the post of Commonwealth Secretary-General.
Johnson, in a tweet this morning, said with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting just a month away, his government is confident the Jamaican is uniquely qualified to lead the powerful 54-country coalition.
“With a month to go until the Commonwealth comes together in Rwanda, delighted to confirm the UK will support @kaminajsmith’s campaign to be the next Secretary General. She has the vast experience & support to unite our unique family of nations and seize the opportunities ahead,” he tweeted.
Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, who currently serves as Jamaican Foreign Affairs Minister, was announced as a candidate by the Andrew Holness government on April 1.
She is challenging incumbent head of the Commonwealth Secretariat, Baroness Patricia Scotland, who has sat as Secretary-General since 2016.
