Unemployment rate in Jamaica hits historic new low

Jamaica’s unemployment rate is at a new historical low.

According to a report from the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) today, the unemployment rate in Jamaica, as of April 2022, is six per cent, compared to 9.0 per cent for the comparable quarter of 2021.

Minister of Finance and the Public Service Dr Nigel Clarke took to social media this afternoon to spread the news, using the hashtag “recovering stronger”.

In April 2022, females accounted for 53 per cent of the newly employed and males 47 per cent.

UNEMPLOYMENT AMONG YOUTH DOWN 8.6 PERCENTAGE POINTS

Females in the island mainly received employment in areas such as service workers and market sale workers, while males received employment in craft and related trade works and elementary occupations.

The unemployment rate for youth aged 14-24 was 15.5 per cent in April 2022, representing a decline of 8.6 percentage points.

The percentage points decline for female youth was twice that of males in the same age group.
